What is a plie?

A Plie is a fundamental ballet movement where a dancer bends the knees and straightens them again, typically with the hips and feet turned out and heels together. This foundational movement is integral in all forms of dance, and it’s also popular in barre class.

How do you do a plie?

  • Steg 1

    Stand up straight with your spine long and shoulders back. Turn your feet out, making sure your hips are externally rotated and your weight is evenly distributed in your feet. Relax your arms low in front of you, slightly rounded with hands a few inches apart.

  • Steg 2

    Lift your heels off the floor to relieve, engaging your thigh muscles.

  • Steg 3

    Keeping an upright posture, bend your knees and then straighten to return to standing position.
